Open Data Tameside

Tameside Council is committed to making as much of the non-personal data that it holds freely available to the public and other organisations. By doing this through our Open Data agenda we hope to increase economic growth and opportunity and improve access and use of services.

Open Data increases transparency about the information we hold and allows the community to creatively use the data for the benefit of Tameside. The Council has released the data sets below so that the community can work with us to make the borough a better place through the information we hold. For example in the past twelve months we have used Open Data to improve the reporting of missed bins and also provide information to residents on which bins to present and when through an Apple App. Innovative applications like this will be more common in the future and we want to help our community develop solutions through the information we hold.

If you would like to work with us on developing an app or using the data then please let us know as we would like to hear from you. We are planning to hold a competition in the future to kick-start the development of apps for the benefit of Tameside, let us know if you are interested in being part of this.

People may also find the information below useful if you have a query that may have usually submitted a Freedom of Information query for.

File formats

Main file types

CSV Files

Comma (or Character) Separated Value files are compatible with all types of spreadsheet and data management software and can also be read and edited in a text editor. They are preferable to proprietary file formats such as Microsoft Word or Excel or Adobe PDF. The Government are recommending CSV as a suitable format for open data to be supplied by public bodies and are mandating it in some cases.

KML Files

KML (Keyhole Markup Language) files were developed as a proprietary format to describe features on a map. The format is now available for anyone to use and is compatible with most freely available web mapping systems, including Bing Maps (Microsoft Ltd) and Google Maps.

XML Files

XML (eXtensible Markup Language) is a standard format for exchanging information. It is particularly useful for information that will be used on a website.

Other file types

  • RSS - Really Simple Syndication
  • KMZ - Compressed version of KML files (smaller files)
  • RDF - Resource Description Framework
