Celebrating Shared Lives Supporting the Independence of Tameside’s Adults

Press Release: 28/06/2024

SHARED Lives Carers, those they support, and Tameside Councils long-term support service gathered for an annual party in the park to celebrate the successful Shared Lives scheme.

Shared Lives empowers adults with a range of physical, learning and mental health needs to live an independent life in their local community by living with or sharing their daily life with a Shared Lives Carer.  This support can be long-term, respite, or day support.

To mark Shared Lives Week a celebratory event takes place each year in Stamford Park, showing appreciation to our current carers and raising awareness of the opportunities to become a Shared Lives Carer in Tameside. This year’s event included lots of fun activities such as Zumba, rounders, arts and crafts and even a sing-along.

Executive Member for Adult Social Care Cllr John Taylor said: ‘’Each year we look forward to celebrating Shared Lives in Tameside, it is such an important scheme which puts people’s independence at the centre.

‘’Thank you to everyone who makes it so successful and our Carers who support people to lead fulfilled lives within our communities.’’

Tameside Council recruit, train, match, and support people over the age of 18 to become Shared Lives Carers. No formal qualifications are expected, and they welcome people from different backgrounds, with different skills and life experience. Carers must be flexible, sensitive, tolerant, and patient with a genuine interest in supporting people. Find out more at www.tameside.gov.uk/sharedlivescarers
