Regenerating Stalybridge
Improvement work on roads and paving due to start Work will be starting very soon on a series of improvements to Stalybridge town centre to make it greener, safer, and more welcoming for everyone. The programme or work, shaped by feedback from local people, businesses and community groups, includes six priority projects which will deliver improvements across Market Street, Armentieres Square, Trinity Street, Grosvenor Square, Corporation Street and Old Town Hall Gardens, upgrading lighting and surfaces to offer safer pedestrian routes and new areas for events and community use. Armentieres Square - Phase 1 - Monday 2 February 2026 – From Monday 2 February, work will begin in Armentieres Square and on parts of Trinity Street. This will include removing existing surfacing, installing temporary surfaces, and new heritage lighting columns with associated electrical upgrades in Armentieres Square. For the first seven days (Monday 2 February until – Sunday 9 February) these areas will be fully closed to vehicles in both directions while initial groundworks are carried out. This means that:
However:
Phase 2: Monday 9 February – August 2026 Then from Monday 9 February traffic will be one way (northbound only) through Trinity Street and Armentieres Square.
Later phases: Market Street works From February through to the end of 2026, work will also start along Market Street and nearby side streets. Regenerating Stalybridge Town Centre
Over several years, we have been working closely with our partners and the local community including residents, businesses, and other stakeholders to regenerate and improve Stalybridge Town Centre for the future by addressing the challenges and issues faced by the town and putting improvements in place.
In 2018, Stalybridge was identified as Tameside's Greater Manchester Challenge Town Centre (Link to Stalybridge Town Centre Challenge - Tameside MBC) by Mayor Andy Burnham, highlighting its potential for strategic urban regeneration. The adoption of the Stalybridge Action Plan: Our Place, Our Plan in 2020 marked a significant step forward in elevating the towns profile and addressing some of the local challenges.
But more work is needed along with other funding to ensure work continued the plans.
In order to make this happen we have successfully bid for and been awarded funding from the Government and other agencies to support the works needed.
Initially with funding from the High Street Heritage Action Zone from Historic England and then more recently this was boosted by £19.9 million in funding from the Governments Capital Regeneration Projects programme.
In partnership with Historic England, public realm improvement works were completed on Market Street this year to restore the significant heritage value and encourage greater pedestrian use of the historic Market Town.
As part of the ongoing strategy to celebrate Stalybridge’s rich heritage, the Grade II Listed Civic Hall also received critical maintenance and reroofing, unlocking the potential of one of Stalybridge’s many historic assets.
The strategy and vision set out in the Stalybridge Regeneration Framework Stalybridge Town Centre Framework which was adopted on January 2024 is leading the focus of the works.
What work has been completed?
Stalybridge High Street Heritage Action Zone (HSHAZ)
The Stalybridge High Street Heritage Action Zone (HSHAZ) project was a partnership between Historic England and Tameside Council focussed on the economic, social, and cultural regeneration of an area covering part of the Stalybridge Town Centre Conservation Area.
A total investment of £2.55m, spread across nine key projects over four years from April 2020 to March 2024 aimed to promote economic, social, and cultural regeneration by helping restore the town’s local historic character and encouraging people to spend more time there.
The Stalybridge HAZ also supported the improvement works on the Civic Hall, restoration of some historic shop fronts on Market Street and the improvement of the public realm along Market Street, forming a wider Heritage Walk which encourages pedestrian flow to Stalybridge’s historic assets and vibrant local businesses.
Find out more information on the HSHAZ here.
What projects are underway now?
Three key project areas have been identified for the funds from Stalybridge Capital Regeneration Programme. The aim of these is to enhance the town’s public spaces and attract visitors to support local businesses, highlight Stalybridge’s cultural heritage, and attract further investment and growth.
These include:
- improvements to roads and pedestrian areas,
- the regeneration of the cultural quarter and heritage assets
- preparation of sites at Stalybridge West for residential development and investment.
Work has also now started to improve accessibility to the Astley Cheetham Library and Museum which is one of Stalybridge’s key cultural and historic assets.

How are these plans being led?
A Strategic Project Board consisting of Stalybridge Elected Ward members which is chaired by an Executive Member have oversight of the works. The Board are advised and supported by Stalybridge Delivery Group including the Town Team, local business owners and residents, who are working alongside Council Officers on the overall programme delivery. The groups inform and report to the Council’s Executive Cabinet as the decision-making body and provide regular updates to the East Neighbourhood Forum as appropriate.
How can you get involved?
