Tameside Libraries have recently signed up to the Green Libraries Manifesto. The Manifesto is a statement created by CILIP, the professional body for librarians and information management specialists in the United Kingdom. It sets out the values and goals which libraries hold and have promised to commit to, in order to help give our workplace, community and planet a more sustainable future.

You can read more about the Manifesto, and read the document in full, on the CILIP website here:

How can libraries help the environment?

By its very nature, a library is a model for sustainability! All of our books are borrowed and read by a multitude of people, which saves on energy creating the book – and saves our borrowers money since they don’t need to buy their own copy.

At Tameside Libraries we want to model good practices and behaviour, so we are currently looking into ways to make our service more environmentally friendly. For example recycling more types of waste, or reducing the need to travel between our library sites.

Our borrowers can make a sustainable choice too by choosing to travel to our libraries on public transport, rather than by car. You can check the TfGM network map for Tameside here, which shows all of our libraries and the nearest bus and tram stops, train stations and cycle hubs.
