Students Rewarded for Neighbourhood Contribution

Press Release: 24/06/2024

STUDENTS from the Aspirations department at Tameside College have been recognised with a certificate of achievement for their contribution to the upkeep of a local park, where they work year-round and in all weathers.

Aspirations is a provision for students with complex and moderate learning difficulties and/or disabilities.

The initiative allows the students to work alongside council staff to get involved with greenspace maintenance around the borough.

They gather to attend weekly community and work skills sessions at Stamford Park as part of their Foundations for Learning and Life course. They engage in a range of tasks such as planting bulbs, sweeping leaves, and building bird boxes.

The scheme, which has been running for around eight years, provides an opportunity to learn in a live setting, outside the classroom, and allows those involved to work toward the skills they need to participate in the wider community.

Councillor Bill Fairfoull, Deputy Executive Leader for Children and Families: “We are so proud of the students for their commitment to learning and getting involved in the upkeep of our fantastic outdoor spaces. These weekly sessions allow students to develop skills and qualities such as teamwork and leadership which are invaluable in finding employment and supporting them to achieve their full potential. Well done to all those involved in this great initiative.”
