Mayor Launches Tameside's 20th Litter Hub

TAMESIDE’S latest litter hub got the official stamp of approval when it was declared open by the Civic Mayor and her Consort

The local community came out in force to support Cllr Betty Affleck, and Mr Declan Fitzpatrick, as they launched the new facility at Holy Trinity Church in St Peter’s ward which had been requested by Holy Trinity Community Centre and Jigsaw Homes.

Volunteers, local councillors and children from Holy Trinity Primary School cheered the Mayor’s efforts before getting down to it with gusto and carrying out a clean-up of the church grounds, adjoining streets and the near-by millennium green.

The community litter-pick showed how simple it is to organise such events using the free equipment provided by the hub. It’s available to all residents and groups wishing to make the area safer, cleaner, and more attractive.

Cllr Denise Ward, Tameside Council’s executive member for climate emergency and environmental services, said: “In the four years since our litter hubs were launched the network has increased from just six to 20, and they stretch to all parts of the borough.

“Hubs exist to help residents and businesses come together to show pride in their areas. The new one at Holy Trinity is a perfect demonstration of the desire people have to take responsibility for their neighbourhoods and have them looking their best.

“Litter hubs allow residents to take the lead in making their districts look loved, clean, tidy and cared-for. It’s that simple, and it’s something we really appreciate as a council.”

There are 20 hubs across the borough, allowing residents to borrow equipment including bags, litter-pickers and hi-vis jackets.

You’ll be told where to leave your bags following the pick (it won’t be at the hub) then just return your equipment until next time.
