Vision outlined for movement and public spaces in Stalybridge

Plans to improve the public spaces across Stalybridge town centre are moving ahead utilising £6.1m of the £20m in government funds awarded for the town.

The vision for the public realm strategy was drafted by the multidisciplinary team led by LDA Design and was approved by Tameside Council Executive Cabinet this week and will help to provide the focus for the improvements across the town to best utilise the secured Capital Regeneration Projects funding.

The plan aims to highlight the towns unique features and make the most of Stalybridge's countryside, canals, parks, historic sites, and landmarks. It will also improve movement by creating better pedestrian paths and signs to help people get around easily. The creation of more attractive space will help develop more areas where people can spend time and enjoy the town.

Engagement with residents and stakeholders previously highlighted issues such as the town's poor layout and lack of defined pedestrian pathways and wayfinding, which make accessibility challenging. This feedback has been integral in shaping the strategy to address these concerns.

Significant work has already been completed under the Stalybridge Heritage Action Zone (HAZ) programme on Market Street, including new seating, street furniture and road improvement work alongside roof works on the Civic Hall. The next phase of work will extend these improvements across Market Street and include enhancements in areas around Trinity Street, Armentieres Square, Trinity Gardens, and Grosvenor Square.

The remaining funding is being used for enabling works on Stalybridge West and regenerating the Cultural Quarter and heritage assets including Stalybridge Civic Hall and the Library and Art Gallery.
