Top-class Ballet is on its way to Tameside

IF you’ve never seen a ballet before, Tameside Libraries have just the production to provide your first taste of this historic and theatrical form of dance.
On Monday 17 June (3pm), Droylsden Library will be hosting Black British Ballet’s performance of “Island Movements” – a short show that tells the story of the people who came to Britain from the West Indies on the ship Empire Windrush in 1948.
Beginning with a young Caribbean soldier serving in the Britain forces in the Second World War, this epic tale follows him and his family through their life in the UK up to the current day.
“Island Movements” explores the impact of the Windrush generation’s experiences on their families, communities and society.
The show will be followed by a question and answer session with the dancers and creators.

Cllr Sangita Patel, Tameside Council’s assistant executive member for culture, heritage, participation and sport, said: “The story of the Windrush generation is deeply moving in itself but there is no more moving way of telling it than through the medium of ballet.
“This performance of ‘Island Movements’ presents a rare opportunity to see some top-class ballet in Tameside, and for free. Whether you are looking for a first chance to see ballet, or have been watching productions for many years, this performance is not to be missed.”
“Island Movements” is being staged by Black British Ballet in collaboration with Tameside Libraries, the Department for Levelling Up and Communities, and Near Neighbours (Bringing People Together).
