Community Grants Success for North Tameside

EIGHT groups shared £15,000 in funding when Tameside Community Safety hosted the borough’s North Neighbourhood Resilient Communities event at West End Methodist Church, Ashton.

Funding decisions were made by residents who listened to each  group’s presentation and then voted on which should be successful.

To qualify for funding, projects had to be based  on one of four themes: preventing crime and reducing fear of crime, improving environmental resilience and challenges, reducing anti-social behaviour and empowering communities.

The successful groups were: Friends of Waterloo Park – Waterloo Community Garden Enhancement; Garside Kidd Community Centre – Fresh Start; Infinity Initiatives – The Inspire Programme; Key to the Door – Triple P Proms, Plants and Play; Mentell – Supporting Ashton Probation Service; Oasis Broadoak Community Hub – Staying Alive First Aid; St Gabriel’s Community Group – Community Garden Outreach; Samson’s Boxing Gym – self-defence boxing training.

Cllr Vimal Choksi, Tameside Council’s executive member for towns and communities, who opened the event, said: “I would like to thank all the volunteers for everything they do to make Tameside a better place to live.

“My gratitude was clearly shared by all the people who attended. There must have been more than 60 people at West End Methodist Church, all playing their part in rewarding community groups that do such very valuable work.”

Ashton’s ward councillors supported the evening along with Jigsaw Homes and Life Line Community Ambulance who volunteered their First Aid services.

The remaining two community grant events are south neighbourhood, Tuesday 4 June (6 to 9pm) at St Mary’s Church, Bower Court, off Talbot Road, Newton, SK14 4HL; and west neighbourhood, Wednesday 13 June, at Trinity Church Hall, 230 Audenshaw Road, Audenshaw, M34 5WP.
