Press Release: 04/01/2024

Veganuary runs from 1 January till the 31 January, it is a personal challenge to make simple swaps with food to try to eat vegan for the month. A record-breaking 700,000 people took part in 2023.

By switching to a plant-based diet, it will reduce large amounts of air, soil and water pollution, and cut the need to use a great number of natural resources that it takes to provide meat and fish to the population.

Additionally, it is proven that participants in Veganuary have experienced a number of health benefits too such as, increased energy, improved mood, lower cholesterol, lower chances of developing heart disease, type 2 diabetes and some cancers.

So, by making greener choices wherever possible and signing up to join Veganuary this will help slow the threat of climate change and help protect our planet for generations to come, as well as, boost your wellbeing.

Tameside Council Executive Member for Climate Emergency & Environmental Services, Cllr Denise Ward said: “It is crucial that as a consumer we do what we can to help support the environment, as it’s said that it is the single most effective contribution an individual can make to protect the planet. So, we are encouraging everyone to make the switch for the month or to try and make greener choices where they can.”

Tameside Council Executive Member for Population Health and Wellbeing Councillor Eleanor Wills said: “Veganuary is a wonderful opportunity for residents to improve their health and wellbeing, and with it just being for the month of January it’s a chance to experiment with healthy foods and recipes to develop your skills in the kitchen!”
