Life in Victorian Manchester with Dr Deborah Woodman

Wednesday 1 July
10am - 11:30amDroylsden Library Club Poster July 2026

Manchester, famous for the Industrial Revolution and its cotton industry, was the shock city of its age, with its factories and often very poor living conditions. A society emerged where you were either middle class or working class, rich or poor, and this division affected all aspects of daily life. Here, we take a look at what life was really like in Victorian Manchester, examining some of the notable people, streets, and buildings that shaped the development of this remarkable city.

Admission: No need to book, just come along on the day. Refreshments provided.

Venue: Droylsden Library, Guardsman Tony Downes House, Manchester Road, Droylsden, M43 6SF

a picture of a woman in a library holding a bookWhat are Book Time for Yourself clubs?

The clubs offer a new type of reading experience. They are small and friendly, and meet at various locations across Tameside once a week for an hour and a half.

How do they work?

Participants read short stories, poems and books aloud to the group. Members can simply sit back and listen, or join in discussions about what they have just heard.

Unlike standard readers' groups members do not need to read the book or short story before coming to a session making them pressure free.

Who is it for?

Book Time for Yourself clubs are open to any adults who are looking for the time and space to relax.

What sort of things do you read?

A mixture of novels, short stories and poems.

Where do the clubs meet?

Please note some groups meet during Open+ hours. To attend you will need to be registered for Open+ access. For full details please visit Open+ or contact the library during staffed hours.
