The Folklore of flowers and trees

The Folklore of flowers and treesWednesday 10 July 2024
10:30-11:30am

Why are certain flowers traditional in bridal bouquets? And should it be white or red roses for your Valentine? The hawthorn is our native tree and revered in folklore, but why should you carry a few of the leaves around with you? This talk looks at how some of the flowers we see everyday, either in the field, garden or shop have links to folklore and ancient beliefs. An illustrated talk with poetry excerpts from Holbrook’s “Hobby Horses will Dance”.

Admission: All adults welcome. No need to book, just come along on the day. Refreshments provided.
Venue: Concord Way, Dukinfield, SK16 4DB

a picture of a woman in a library holding a bookWhat are Book Time for Yourself clubs?

The clubs offer a new type of reading experience. They are small and friendly, and meet at various locations across Tameside once a week for an hour and a half.

How do they work?

Participants read short stories, poems and books aloud to the group. Members can simply sit back and listen, or join in discussions about what they have just heard.

Who is it for?

Book Time for Yourself clubs are open to any adults who are looking for the time and space to relax.

What sort of things do you read?

A mixture of novels, short stories and poems.

Where do the clubs meet?

Please note some groups meet during Open+ hours. To attend you will need to be registered for Open+ access. For full details please visit Open+ or contact the library during staffed hours.
