Active Travel Fund – Walking and Cycling Scheme Consultations
1. Stamford Street (A635) / Clarence Street (B6431) Crossing Upgrade
Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) have received Active Travel Funding from the Greater Manchester Combined Authority, to make improvements across the city region, to develop highway infrastructure in support of active travel.
The junction of Stamford Street and Clarence Street in Stalybridge, currently has no pedestrian crossing facilities. TfGM are proposing the installation of a new pedestrian phase to improve access and safer crossing facilities for pedestrians and cyclists, at each arm of this junction.
TfGM are running a public consultation which will commence on Friday 13 June 2025 and will run for 4 weeks.

2. Ladbrooke Road, Ashton
Through working with the local community, Tameside Council has identified that the busy nature of and high traffic speeds along Ladbrooke Road (Ashton-under-Lyne) are key barriers to walking to school. The scheme will introduce a new crossing outside Hurst Knoll St James Primary School, alongside complementary infrastructure such as side road treatments, footway widening, and physical traffic calming measures to support the existing 20mph speed limit.
A public consultation will commence shortly.

3. Cycle Lane Upgrades
The Council was successful in a bid to secure Government funding for schemes that will give people more opportunities to choose cycling and walking for their day-to-day journeys. Walking and cycling are not only better for both physical and mental health, helping people keep fit and active, they are also better for the environment by reducing congestion and improving air quality.
A consultation on the following three Active Travel Fund schemes was held between 5 September and 14 October 2022. This was to ensure that residents, businesses and stakeholders had an opportunity to help improve the schemes and their neighbourhood. The projects have been designed to improve walking and cycling connections and will support commuting and leisure journeys by introducing segregated cycle lanes. The proposed schemes will make up a key part of the Bee Network, GM’s vision for an integrated public transport system, which includes cycling and walking, and will enable more people to switch to active travel for everyday journeys.
This consultation closed on Friday 14 October 2022
