Learning Disabilities and Neurodiversity

A learning disability affects the way someone understands information, they may find it difficult to understand complex information or learn new skills.

Different types of support can help people to learn new skills and live as independently as possible.

Alongside our partners we offer a range of person-centred local services designed to support people to live happy and fulfilled lives, giving people the opportunity to have more control, make informed choices and be involved with their communities.

Supported Living

Supported Living is housing and support for people who have learning disabilities and/or autism that have been assessed as needing care and support.

Single Tenancy
This is for people who want to live alone and could be in a house or in a flat/apartment and normally includes staff support during the day and night. In some cases, people may be supported by technology.

Shared Housing
This is where a person may live with a small number of people (between 2-4 people) sharing a house. This may include 24 hour staff support.

Shared Lives

Tameside’s Shared Lives scheme offers a range of services to support people with learning disabilities, who are being offered support by individual Carers and families that are not directly employed by us.

Shared Lives offers:

Long Term Support for individuals who live with carers and families full-time.
Respite where an individual can access short stay respite with a carer and their family.
Day Service Provision where an individual may have support and companionship with a carer and their family as an alternative to other day service options.

Day Services

Alongside our partners we provide a range of day services, allowing for a greater choice for people who may access one or more support services per week.

Day services can offer:

Support to people who have complex needs, which may include access to therapies and support with physiological and behavioural interventions.
Respite for individuals and their families.
Developing independent living skills.
Preparation for employment.

Respite

Respite gives people and their family’s an opportunity to have a break from each other.

Respite options include:

Traditional building-based respite with 24-hour care and support.
Shared Lives short stay where someone has short breaks with a Carer and their family.
Day services.
Direct Payments where a person can access funding to purchase personalised respite.

Homemaker

The Homemaker service offers 24-hour support to people living in the community.

We offer support to adults with learning and physical disabilities, sensory needs, and autism to be safe and do things in the community with the right level of support. We work in a person-centred way to make sure the people who access our service are at the heart of what we do.

Supported Employment

Routes to Work offer person-centred employment support to people who have disabilities. The team support people into paid employment and workers with employers to make sure that reasonable adjustments can be made.

Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)

The Local Offer brings together a range of support services and information for children and young people aged 0-25, with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).
