The D Scheme is used when a cared for child or a care leaver is in need of a dentist and there have been failed attempts to get an NHS dentist for them.

If this is an emergency situation, we need to follow the Greater Manchester Dental Pathway and you will need to make contact with our Leaving Care Team by emailing leavingcare@tameside.gov.uk or calling 0161 342 4477 in working hours Monday to Wednesday, 8:30am till 5pm, Thursday 8:30am till 4:30pm, Friday 8:30am till 4pm). If you need help outside of working hours, call 111.

You can locate your nearest dentist here. You will then need to call the NHS dentist and arrange an appointment.

The NHS dental practice receptionist should advise the caller that consent is required before the child's cared for or care experienced status can be verified with the NHS Cared for Children Team.

Once consent has been obtained, the dental practice should email caredforchildren@tgh.nhs.uk. The NHS Cared for Children Team will respond within 48 hours to confirm the child's status and answer any queries. Once the child's status has been verified, an appointment can be arranged.
Where appropriate, you should be accompanied by, or encouraged to attend by, your foster carer, residential care staff, personal adviser, health professional, or social worker.

Participating D Scheme dentists will take part in quarterly support meetings with the Cared for Children Team via Microsoft Teams. These meetings will provide an opportunity to discuss any issues, share feedback, and identify solutions to support the effective delivery of the scheme.
You may be able to receive free NHS dental treatment. If you're not eligible, standard NHS dental charges will apply.
