Our Tameside School Streets Programme

What is a School Street

A School Street is a road outside a school that is closed to most motorised traffic during the school drop-off and pick-up times. This creates a safer, healthier, and more pleasant environment for children and their families to walk, cycle, or scoot to school.

Why Are We Introducing School Streets?

The programme aims to tackle issues such as traffic congestion, road danger, and air pollution at the school gates. By creating a temporary car-free zone, we can:

• Improve road safety: Fewer cars mean less risk of collisions and a calmer environment for everyone.
• Encourage active travel: It makes it easier and more appealing for children and parents to walk, cycle, or use scooters.
• Improve air quality: With fewer idling engines, the air children breathe at the school gates is cleaner.
• Foster community: It creates a more pleasant space for families to socialise and connect.

How Will It Work?

The School Street will be in effect during term-time only, at set times. These will vary according to the school start and end times. Times will be agreed in consultation with each school that we are working with.

They generally operate for between 30- and 60-minutes during morning and afternoon school drop-off and pick-up times.

• Morning: between 7:45am to 9:15am
• Afternoon: between 2:45pm to 3:45pm

During these times, the street will become a Pedestrian and Cycle Zone. Signs will be placed at the entry points to inform drivers of the restrictions, and the scheme will be enforced by marshals and volunteers.

School Streets do not operate during school holidays or at weekends.

Our Current School Streets 

We are proud to have launched the School Streets programme at two locations in our borough.

Russell Scott Primary School

The School Street operates on Clare Street, Palatine Street, Palatine Court, Palatine Mews, Denton, Manchester M34 3LQ. This scheme was introduced in 2023 to create a safer environment for students and families.

• Operating Times: 8:15am-9am and 3pm-3:45pm

• Permit Application: Residents within the designated zone can apply for a permit to access the street during operational hours. Please contact us at highwayenquiries@tameside.gov.uk to apply.

Livingstone Primary and Nursery School

The School Street operates on Vale Side, Mossley, Ashton-under-Lyne OL5 0AP. This scheme has been successful in reducing traffic and improving air quality since its launch.

• Operating Times: 8.30am–9am and 2.45pm–3.30pm Monday to Friday each school term time.

• Permit Application: Residents on Vale Side within the designated zone are eligible for a permit. For more information or to apply, please email highwayenquiries@tameside.gov.uk

Who Can Drive In?

Residents and other eligible groups (such as Blue Badge holders or carers) living within the School Street zone will be granted an exemption to allow them to drive in and out during the restricted hours. 

Visitors and deliveries should ideally be scheduled to arrive outside of the operational times.
