Dukinfield Centenary Souvenir

Dukinfield Crest

Civic Silver

The following items of civic silver are held by Tameside Council, and most of them can be seen on display in the foyer of Ashton Town Hall.

Mayoral Chain: Made of 18 carat gold and consisting of crowned shields held together by links of the letter "D". A large pendant bears the borough coat of arms.

The chain was paid for by public subscription, and the pendant was the gift of the wife of the M.P. for the Stalybridge and Dukinfield Parliamentary constituency, the Hon Matthew White Ridley. Ridley, a Conservative, was elected in 1900, and the chain was presented on June 15, 1901.

Tameside Council also has in its possession the Mayoress' chain and the Deputy Mayor's medal.

Silver Trowel: Presented to Miss Charlotte Gertrude Astley for the laying of the foundation stone of the Jubilee Hall, in 1936.

Inkstand: Presented to Dukinfield Corporation by the Refuge Assurance Company, on their centenary, to commemorate their origins at 59 Astley Street, Dukinfield.

Pestles and Set Square: Presented to Mrs A.W. Nicholson of Arisaig, Lady of the Manor, who laid the foundation stone of the town hall in September, 1899. The inscription on the trowel reads: "Dukinfield Urban District Council. To Mrs A.W. Nicholson of Arisaig, Inverness, Lady of the Manor of Dukinfield, on the occasion of the laying of the cornerstone of the municipal buildings, Dukinfield, September 23rd, 1899.

Key: Commemorating the opening of the Clarendon Fields Housing Estate. It is an exact replica of that presented to Princess Mary when she opened the Heaton Park Estate. It bears the inscription: "Clarendon Fields Housing Scheme, Dukinfield. Opened January 28th, 1928. Presented to Miss Carlotta G. Nicholson."
