If you are a carer of someone who is not your partner, spouse or a child under 18 and you live in the same home as them, you may be able to get a discount on your Council Tax.

To get the discount you must care for the person for an average of 35 hours per week or more and live at the address permanently.

The person you care for must also be getting one of the following benefits: 

  • An Attendance Allowance
  • High or middle rate Disability Living Allowance (care)
  • The standard or enhanced rate of Personal Independence Payment daily living component

You will need to provide proof of the qualifying benefit, but you can proceed with application without proof

  1. The spouse of the person receiving care; or 
  2. Living together as husband or wife; or 
  3. The parent of the person receiving care; where the person receiving care is a child below the age of 18 years.
