Tameside Council Debt Assist

Tameside is introducing Debt Assist, a managed support service that helps residents deal with council debts in a constructive way. Debt Assist helps residents to address the root cause of debt, whether this involves helping maximise income with benefits, discounts and social tariffs.

Where appropriate, residents are also referred to an external FCA accredited debt triage partner, who provide professional support with managing and resolving debt challenges.

The service is delivered in partnership with Liberata and starts in October 2025.

Why are we introducing this

Council debt affects vital local services. By adopting Debt Assist, Tameside is taking action to recover outstanding debts while supporting residents to manage their money more effectively. By helping residents to maximise their income, or tailoring payment plans to meet their needs, Debt Assist ensures residents are able to pay, removing stress debt can bring.

How it works

• We contact residents about their debt and invite them to share income and spending details.

• An affordable repayment plan is agreed.

• Tools such as benefit calculators and referrals to independent debt advise help people to find extra support.

• Plans can be reviewed if circumstances change.
