Severe traffic delays following police operation in Hollingworth
Press Release Date: 10 July 2012
Latest Update
Traffic restrictions have now been lifted but there is still congestion in the area. Police are advising people to remain vigilant and that they are still carrying out an investigation.
Below is the latest update from Assistant Chief Constable Garry Shewan regarding the incident.
Statement regarding ongoing incident in Tameside
Assistant Chief Constable Garry Shewan said: "There remains a significant policing presence in the Hollingworth area of Tameside following an armed robbery earlier today.
"As a precaution, road closures were put in place and working with the local authority we asked schools in the area to keep their children inside.
"We have carried out a number of detailed searches in that area and we are now lifting those restrictions and those closures so parents can now pick up their children. However, public safety remains our paramount concern so I would advise any parents to pick up their children and go straight home until this man is caught. We do not want to cause any undue alarm but protecting the public is our primary aim so I would ask people to be vigilant, keep their eye out for anything suspicious, and if you do pick up your children from school please return straight home and we will issue updates about the investigation as soon as possible.
"I am aware there are lots of rumours and speculation in the local community but I want to stress that we have had no further sightings of a man with a gun, no shots fired and no reports of any injuries at this time. We will of course keep people informed with any updates as soon as they become available.
"This is a fast-paced investigation and we are pursuing every possible lead to ensure we find this man and protect our communities."
