Apprentice fair is just the job

Apprentice fair is just the job

Press Release Date: 3 May 2012

A photo from the Apprentice FairTameside's third apprenticeship fair was the best yet. More than 700 young people were at Dukinfield Town Hall with their parents and carers on 25 April to check out the job opportunities and advice on offer from a variety of local employers.

Master classes offering tips on interview technique and the most effective way to complete application forms ran at 20-minute intervals throughout the event and were very popular.

More than 350 young people pre-registered for the fair with as many again simply turning up on the day.

Employers were equally enthusiastic and Bill Jennings of JDA Architects Link to External Website, Denton, who had a stand at the fair, commented: “What a bright group of students. I have never met so many eager young people in one place all keen to get a job and a qualification.

“I was asked about our apprentice roles right through to full architectural qualifications, and I was only too pleased to help. Additional information can be obtained by contacting our office (0161 336 5011) and asking for the RIBA “Think Architecture” booklet.”

Tameside Council’s aim is to have a quarter of 16 to 19-year-olds in an apprenticeship by 2015 and has already hit the 20 per cent mark.

The Executive Leader of Tameside Council, Cllr Kieran Quinn, commented: “I have spoken many times about the importance that Tameside Council attaches to apprenticeships.

“With youth unemployment at record levels we want to do all we can to give our young people the best possible chance of getting a job that has good prospects and enables them to continue learning and building their skills.

“Alongside our successful 50/50 scheme Link to External Website, where we contribute £1,000 towards the cost of a local employers taking on a Tameside-based apprentice, the fair is a key event to drive up the number of apprentices in the borough.

“I was absolutely delighted that the 2012 fair was so successful. It ran very smoothly and early feedback from employers and young people who attended has been extremely positive.

“I would like to thank all concerned in staging the fair and especially our apprentices who helped out on the day. They made an immense contribution, showed great initiative, and will clearly make superb mentors for the new intake.”
