How to join the library

Joining the library is easy and membership is free.  There are two ways to join, you can choose to join in person by visiting any Tameside Library or you can join online.

Online Library System

Online Library System

Click here to register for our online library system, where you can reserve, renew, or return items.

Join in person

  • If you choose to join by visiting a library then all we require is some proof of your name and address, such as a recent utility bill or bank statement. This can be in either physical or digital format
  • If your circumstances mean you are unable to show us proof of address you can still join as a Light User.  This allows you to borrow 2 books and access the internet free of charge. Please ask our staff about becoming a light user when you visit.
  • Under 16s must have parent or guardian consent to join the Library.
  • You will be issued with a Library Card, please bring it every time you visit the library.
  • Your library card can be used at any Tameside Library and is issued in accordance with the Library Byelaws; a copy of which is on display at all branches. When you join the library you are agreeing to comply with these Byelaws.
  • All information held on the library computer system is covered by the Data Protection Act and will not be given to any unauthorised person or organisation.

Join Online

If you are not a member of any Tameside Library, we invite you to join online:Register online

  • Just go to the front page of our online library system,
  • Click on Register in the top right hand corner of the screen.
  • Next you should complete the on-screen form, you will require a functioning email address.
  • Under 16s will need to call in or phone the library as a parent or guardian must give consent to join. Please call 0161 342 2031.
  • The system will provide you with a temporary membership number, and will send you an welcome email inviting you to call in to your nearest Tameside Library where your temporary ID can be converted into a proper library card with full member privileges.
  • While you have a temporary ID on the system, you will be able to place reservations for books which are in stock in our libraries, and the branch from which you choose to collect them will alert you - probably by email - when they are ready for collection.
  • Please note - you do not need to rejoin Tameside Libraries using the online membership form if you already have a library card from us. All you need to do is contact any Tameside Library to get a password activated on your existing membership. Please do not join again online if you are already a member - the result will be duplicate records for you on the system.
